After a long week of cramming for a chemistry test while also trying to stay on top of my Algebra II homework, a weekend pick-me-up was calling my name. But my dream of a nice Saturday sleep-in followed by a classic hazelnut latte was quickly interrupted after seeing the new Shawnee coffee shop, Brew Haha’s hours.
No way they close at 2 p.m. on a Saturday — maybe Sunday I can go? Nope. They’re closed.
So, my caffeine addiction prevailed as I woke up at 9:30 a.m just to go to Brew Haha.
After two frantic U-turns, I found the beige blocky industrial building tucked between a Sonic and bright blue carwash. Remnants of their opening day like folded banners and advertisements, were on the ground outside of the parking lot.
I strolled into the building hoping for a muffin and a solid latte.
The display case disappointed me with only giant bread loaves left — note to self:get here before 11 a.mif I want a pastry — but the drink menu did not disappoint. S’mores and nutella lattes lined the drink menu, and all of them intrigued me so I ended up getting a latte flight with four 6 oz lattes.
First on the latte flight was the berries and cream latte. The blueberry flavor was refreshingly unique but it was the only latte left unfinished. The latte flavor felt artificial and not the homemade feel I was wanting. When returning I would sub it out for a salted caramel latte.
I would have been upset if I didn’t have three other drinks to try, and the very reasonable price. The $16 latte flight felt like a steal when lattes are typically no less than $7 in the coffee shop industry. I got two iced lattes, the Teddy Graham and the Berries and Cream latte. I also got a hot brown sugar and a hazelnut Latte.
In between doing my daily New York Times games the cinnamon colored teddy graham latte was the perfect mood lifter after failing at the “Connections.”
With the caramel flavor added along the sides, the Teddy Graham latte is definitely what I would recommend to anyone who tries Brew Haha. The latte was filled with notes of cinnamon, and perfect levels of sweetness.
The brown sugar latte was perfectly warm and with even flavor seeped through the latte, definitely my favorite. It had the perfect natural sweetness unlike the artificial flavor of the Berries and Cream latte.
Throughout the whole experience the wall length windows letting natural light in was the perfect touch if only it wasn’t looking onto trash off the side of Shawnee Mission Parkway. .
My disappointment was quickly eased when I sipped the hazelnut latte. The hazelnut was the deciding latte for me. To my delight, the frothiness and classic nutty taste made it the perfect latte for any traditional flavor lovers. As someone who has had many terrible hazelnut lattes from small businesses this latte was the perfect redemption.
The lattes and the wonderful set up makes this place worth the trip even though the inconvenient hours may take away from your weekend sleep in.
