Chili for Charity: Junior class Student Council hosts Chili Cook Off as a fundraiser for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau

The junior class Student Council members raised $352 from their Chili Cook Off on Nov. 16 as part of the annual Can Drive fundraisers for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau.

Six teams ranging three to six members entered their homemade chilis for a $25 competition fee. Chili tasters paid $5 to sample and vote for their favorite chili, and a jar was available for additional donations. Junior Class Secretary Emma Kuhlman estimates that around 30 additional samplers attended. Competing and sampling in the cook off were open to any East students, teachers and parents.

Juniors Sophie Angilan, Claire Goettsch and Marissa Liberda took first place with their smoked-brisket, barbecue-pork chili with garlic butter croutons, and received matching “I won the Chili Cook Off” aprons.

In second place was junior Greyson Imm and seniors Caroline Gould and Caroline Wood with their “South of the Border” chili, a recipe from Wood’s grandmother. They received second place ribbon pins designed and pressed by art teacher and junior class sponsor Emma Chalk.

A team of East parents Kate and Clay Hartman and Cindy and Brad Kuhlman made up the third place team, with the Hartmans’ own chili recipe, and were awarded a spray-painted bronze ladle.

Besides the $25 entry fee, all teams were required to bring their own chili toppings, a printed list of ingredients and a CrockPot. The teams arrived at 6 p.m. for setup in the cafeteria and sampling and judging took place between 6:30 and 8 p.m.

After collecting the votes, Special Event Committee Chair and junior Abi Limbird announced the winners and presented the prizes.

“For our first ever time doing this, we’re really happy with the result,” Limbird said.
