“Do you want a lemon drop?”
The question echoed throughout the room as theatre students participated in an improv drill where the students twisted and repeated a simple phrase into something hilarious, strange and completely their own. On the side of the classroom, Brian Cappello watched with an exaggerated look of horror from the front of the room.
Moments like that define Cappello’s classroom.
After nearly 40 years of teaching, the SM East alum is retiring, leaving behind a program and a group of students — all impacted by his creativity and perspective. Inspired by his own theater teacher, Cappello said he “wanted to do for others what he inspired me to do.”
Before returning to SM East to teach after his high school years, Cappello taught for 14 years in Ottawa, Kansas. Over time, his approach became less about strict structure and more about helping students understand themselves.
Sophomore Leilani Raber experiences this balanced teaching style in one of the three classes Cappello teaches, Actor’s Studio.
“Our first assignment was really just making a playlist about ourselves,” Raber said. “He mentioned the idea that you can’t understand how to act if you can’t understand yourself, which was fascinating.”
Raber described Capello’s teaching style as “very open,” adding that he focuses more on students as people than just performers.
When Raber was in the hospital and missed school, Capello provided extra time to memorize lines.
“He cares about all his students as people, not just academically,” Raber said. “He was so understanding and made sure I was doing well.”
That balance, humor and care is what Raber says they will miss most.
“I think we’ll miss the fun,” Raber said. “He really brings a light to school.”
For Cappello, the feeling is mutual. His favorite parts of SM East are “the kids” and his fellow teachers, along with the productions that brought students together on stage.
As he leaves, his advice is simple: trust yourself, stay flexible and “learn something new every day.”
“After dealing with every crisis imaginable and living to tell about it I don’t get upset too easily about much of anything,” Capello said. “I’ve learned that no matter how much of a big deal something may be at the time, it really isn’t!”
