Breaking News: Students are planning a walkout to protest ICE

Students plan to hold a walkout on Feb. 17 to protest recent actions by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The walkout will begin at 1 p.m. and take place on the lower football field near the junior lot.

Sophomores Porter Anderson, Trip Hagman and Hudson Terreros started planning the walkout with a group of students after they saw that about 300 students at SM North did a walkout on Feb. 11. Terreros, Hagman and Anderson believe that the walkout is important because although SM East is a predominantly white school, it will show that students are still concerned about the increased ICE operations and unnecessary violence towards immigrants and Americans.

“We're showing people at the school that we care,” Anderson said. “We're not going to sit around and take it and hear all this crap about it. I think it just needs to be said that, you know, there's people at East that care and people at East who will do things about it.”

To promote the walkout, students have been putting up posters throughout the school and posting about it on their Instagram and Snapchat stories. Terreros has discussed the walkout with both associate principal Kristoffer Barikmo and principal Jason Peres. Peres explained that they support students’ right to protest, but students who participate will receive an unexcused absence, according to Terreros.

“I will say that as a school, we do not promote students missing school,” Peres, who was unable to interview but wrote in an email. “We do support our students using their voices and exercising their rights. We expect our students to remain safe and respectful at all times.”

Some students have responded negatively to the walkout. According to Anderson, some of his friends have said the walkout is stupid, and a student has threatened on social media to spray protesters with bear spray.

Terreros and Anderson believe these threats are mainly just anger on social media, and the two are still focused on having a successful walkout. Terreros is expecting about 70 students to participate so far, but believes the number of students doesn’t matter.

“If only 20 or 30 people show up, I would still protest, because it's not about giving up when it's a small number of people who want to keep fighting,” Terreros said. “That's the only way you can keep going. Never back down, even if it's a small group, just show that you care and that you show up.”

The Harbinger will be live-streaming the walkout on the @smeharbinger Instagram account.
