Breaking News: Jan. 23 School Board Meeting recap

At SMSD’s Board Meeting at the Center for Academic Achievement on Jan. 23, the board discussed upcoming enrollments for Pre-K and Kindergarten, upcoming and past contests as well as recent events at the CAA.

-The meeting started by Superintendent Dr. Michelle Hubbard congratulating the winners of this year’s PTA reflections contest — a contest for students to submit fine arts they made relating to that year’s theme. This year’s theme was “Show Your Voice”. East sophomore Ishya Bhasvar won with a musical composure piece.

-Enrollment for Pre-K and Kindergarten begins Feb. 10 at 8 a.m.. Parents can enroll their kids online here when it opens.

-The district announced their next contest “The Next Great Idea” for student entrepreneurs to share their ideas for solving a problem. Those interested can attend a Webex Meeting at 6 p.m. on Feb. 2. More information and the Webex link can be found on the SMSD website.

-The CAA held an open house for their signature programs as enrollment approaches for high schools. This allowed students and families to see the building and learn about their medical, culinary, animation and game design, biotechnology, engineering programs as well as Project Blue Eagle.

-Finally, the Board of Education recognized two “All Stars” from the district which included Overland Park Elementary’s secretary Denise Peery and Mill Creek teacher Shannon Pomerantz.
