The boys varsity swim and dive team placed first overall in the 6A Boys Swim and Dive State Championship.
“I had really high expectations for the boys swim team,” team manager and junior Vada Walsh said. “I’ve watched them work really hard to achieve this goal. They’ve had some insane time drops and some really crazy cuts and considerations.”
The event was through the Kansas State High School Activities Association. It started on Thursday, Feb. 19, and ended on Saturday, Feb. 21, and was hosted at Shawnee Mission School District Aquatic Center.
6A Swim Preliminaries took place on Friday, Feb. 20, and swimmers who met the required time qualified for finals the next day.
SM East generated a combined score of 290.5. SM East defeated the second-place Blue Valley West score of 270.
“They totally deserved this spot, and they have a lot of depth and ability to win,” Walsh said. “It means a lot to the boys; they’ve been training hard all year, and they were mentally and physically ready for this win.”
