Blog: Thoughts on Senior Year

About three months ago I began senior year which I have been told by many older people is the best year of high school. It has definitely lived up to its expectations and for three main reasons.
1. An extremely easy schedule.
-You hear about people who try to make their senior year as easy as possible by taking really easy classes so they can blow them off. Well, I did it unintentionally. I was originally in Statistics and AP Government but after back-to-school night my own mother made me drop. “You should be taking easy classes this year.” I mean, how am I supposed to argue with that? After rearranging my schedule I ended up with three electives, English and two math classes. I don’t have a 7th hour or seminar because of OJT, this means I leave school early everyday to “work” when I really only work one day a week plus weekends. My electives are the classes that come with the most work – Marketing and Newspaper – but it’s work that I enjoy like designing pages, writing stories and making resumes, so I’m not complaining.
2. Football has been spectacular.
-I love football. I can’t describe it in any other way and the perfect way to start senior year was with an amazing high school football team because the pep and school spirit made it so incredible. The games this year have been ten times more fun than previous years and it is because we were incredible. Our team made history by setting a school regular season record of 8-1, winning the district championship and winning their share of the league title. Towards the end of the season I would find myself checking the sunflower league blog more than logging onto Facebook (which I log onto a lot) because I was getting so into the idea of how good we were. I wanted to know everything about our competition. Previous years I went to maybe three games a season, this year I was at 8 of the ten. I didn’t go to one because none of my friends wanted to make the road trip to Lawrence and the other I was extremely sick in bed. Instead of sleeping, which the doctor said I needed to do, I watched the game online. I think everyone hoped for a longer post-season, but it’s okay because this season had to of been one of the biggest highlights of high school. Thanks boys for providing me with that. In addition to high school, the college I plan on attending next year, Mizzou, hasn’t had to bad of a season either. The weekends have became so much more exciting with a football game to always look forward to.
3. The senior class has come together
-I have always heard that: “when you become seniors everyone hangs out together-they don’t just hang out with their ‘clique’” but I haven’t really seen it with the past senior classes that I have been at East with. Maybe it’s because I wasn’t a senior. But this year the class of 2011 has really impressed me. We came together and rented out a space for our float party instead of breaking up, and people who never hung out before hang out now. I just spent my last weekend with a group of people who I never hung out with until this year –and it’s amazing. Also, at games, the senior class makes sure we all stand together. It is a really cool thing to watch happen and it makes me so much more excited for the rest of the year. Also, there is nothing I love more than the “SENIOR, SENIOR” chant!
I’m so glad that this year has had such an amazing start and I can only imagine it is going to get better.
