Blog: A One-Word Win

The key to winning an election can come down to one word. In 2008, for President Barack Obama, that word was change. In today’s society, we don’t dive into issues or focus on a candidate’s platform. Most voters hinder a candidate to one word, and one word only. Obama knew and embraced this fact, making him the clear front-runner in 2008.

I don’t like to admit this is how politics in America work, but I strongly believe it is the prominent vote-getter today in presidential elections. People do look at other issues, but voter turnout is higher in years of presidential elections. People feel empowered when they are told they will play a part in choosing the nation’s leader. The empowerment diminishes when electing a state or local official for most people. This lack of action shows that attempting to get people to the polls can’t be overly complicated.

Since most people don’t grasp the power they have, keeping it simple really is the key. Here is how to pick your word:
-Your word doesn’t need to show a process. People only need to see the end result or that you will have some kind of transition from the current problems.
-This word also needs to be able to encompass all of the nation’s issues. You can’t focus on one thing.

Another thing to note is that it doesn’t matter what political party you are in. Any vague adjective will work. Republicans in 2012 could use change just as Obama did in 2008. People are drawn to it. Obama’s promise of change did occur, but was it enough? The answer is yes.

The benefits of using vague platforms extend beyond the voter appeal. Obama doesn’t have to stand up to the fact that he extended Bush tax cuts or the fact that he is maintaining high troop levels abroad. He can say change takes time. He can tell his voters to look at health care. He can tell his voters anything. Change can vary depending on the person, and that is why one word platforms win elections.

As the presidential election of 2012 comes closer, Republicans only need to remember three simple words in order to achieve success: Recover, Rebuild, Rejuvenate.

You can thank me later, Mitt.
