Blockbuster or Block-bust: “Avatar: Fire and Ash” left a lot to be desired in all aspects

Whoosh. Crunch. Whirl.

A flash of color flies past me, and I am immediately transported to the far away and imaginative world of Pandora.

The bright dragon-like bodies of ikran continue to fill the screen as I grab a second bite of perfectly buttered popcorn and settle in to watch the third Avatar movie, “Avatar: Fire and Ash,” released Dec.19.

I’d been anticipating this movie since 2022 after watching the much long-awaited second movie.

The Avatar series is set in a world called Pandora that is full of lush forests, unique animals, swelling oceans and the iconic blue people with cat-like features called the Na’vi.

When humans come to Pandora in the first movie, most of them want to mine and ravage the land. However, a small handful of scientists are more interested in studying the unique biomes and making connections with the Na’vi. The scientists can experience Pandora and the Na’vi by connecting to lab-grown avatars of the Na’vi that are mixed with the human’s DNA.

The protagonist of all three movies, Jake Sully, is an ex-marine who winds up with an avatar and falls in love with the Na’vi culture, religion and planet. He’s the one who starts a war against and ultimately drives out the humans who are harming Pandora.

In the second movie, “Avatar: The Way of Water,” the humans come back, and Sully has to drive them out again, relying on the help of other Na’vi tribes and the goddess whom they worship, Eywa.

“Avatar: Fire and Ash” had a plot almost identical to the second movie and left me wanting more depth in the plot.

The ending was completely unsatisfying and seemed unfinished, which is outrageous, because the director, James Cameron, had a runtime of three hours and 15 minutes to come to a conclusion and wrap up the loose ends.

On top of the weak ending, the bulk of the movie was still a copy-and-paste action movie plot that I’ve seen a million times in movies a quarter of the length of this one.

Adding to my disappointment was the fact that Sully had almost no character development, and I felt let down by some of his actions.

In the first movie, Sully learns the way of the Na’vi and slowly begins to see the beauty of the world around him. He’s able to look past his violent and rough past in the Marines and focus on finer things like the connection of the Na’vi people, the plants and animals that can be peaceful and the power of faith. Now this is character development.

In the newest movie, Sully seems to forget all of this and revert to his original violent and hard Marine self. He even goes so far as to run his own family like a squad and have his very own children call him “Sir”.

Sully’s character was more than just an annoyance on screen; it was also a waste of potential. The first Avatar movie was special because it not only provided entertainment, but it also inspired millions to care more about the environment and their faith.

All the Avatar movies have the potential for this much, if not more, inspiration and influence. However, any influence the third movie might have had on viewers was completely lost in a plot that was basically just another unnecessary James Bond movie with the only difference being the color of the characters.

Despite the many downfalls of this movie, I do have to give credit to its special effects and Computer Generated Images. The filming made it feel transformative, and I felt like I was right there with the characters, fully blue and crouching among mysterious flora unlike anything on Earth.

I could practically smell the salty waters they swam in and feel the dirt on my feet, but even these senses weren’t enough to cover up the fact that the movie was a total bust and a waste of its possible potential.

These comments absolute brutal. Like let a girl live ok? You people need to get a real life and stop hating on someone who had to write this as a class assignment. It’s a high school website and you people probably live in your mom’s basement.

WAYS TO RECOVER YOUR LOST BTC FROM A FAKE ONLINE BROKER.

I was scammed by a fake Bitcoin investment company last month and lost about $750,000, which was my life savings. They promised guaranteed profits, denied my withdrawal requests, and eventually disappeared. I was completely devastated and didn’t know where to turn.
A friend later referred me to SAFEGUARD RECOVERY EXPERT, and I reached out to them for help. They listened and guided me through the process.

Give up reviewing movies. This is not your calling. Your review for lack of words. Trash. Regret reading the five paragraphs I did. Refused to finish this garbage. Get a real job. This movie made over a billion dollars in less than a month. What did you last movie make

The movie was amazing. You "journalists" just need something to complain about. I always find it funny when people who don't know any of the lore or background outside of the movies sits there and critiques it.

I really enjoyed this movie and went to see it a second time BUT I really hope the next one gives and sticks to Jake's character development as well as deals with his relationship with his children... I think these areas left a lot to be desired

Lots of hate for a pretty decent review. I'm glad I went, but also found myself wondering when sully became a jerk, most significantly to his own kids. As a father, I can't imagine blaming one son for the death of another, and yet he did just that and never apologized for it. To say that's not a character flaw and a massive departure from the original Sully is just dishonest.

As for the plot, it is absolutely a redo of the last two. The big bad industrialists come to wipe out all the pretty nature for profit, the natives fight back, and eventually win when they recruit the planet mind. Rinse and repeat. It's a beautiful movie, but it's a tired plot and the character development, especially for Sully was a low point for the trilogies so far.

Avatar fire and ashes is the most emotional film of the Avatar saga.

I heard the story line got crazy and people were starting to grow tails. I never considered Avatar an amazing movie on any level. Sometimes I think to myself how on Earth does Avatar make 3 billion but the new Predator film which was amazing can't make 500 million.

This review is so self indulgent. This person needs to get a life and never be allowed into anymore Avatar movies. Nuff said.

People who dig into movies too much will never enjoy them as much as others and if you didn't like the movie thats fine but it sounds like it might just be you...

Interesting calling a movie a bust that just passed a billion again is beyond laughable.

  14. Anonymous says:

Yeah well I’d say millions of others disagree

The only thing that was a bust was this review. You completely missed the whole point of these movies which was to enjoy the development and the ride! Jake cannot fully leave his Marine instincts behind especially when the Naavi keep getting hammered with advanced weaponry! He'll always be a man of two worlds, you don't seem to get that! The movie was fire!
