Between the Trees: A q&a with creators of the Hammocking Club, Nora Hill and Hannah Simonsen

Heading into fall, seniors Nora Hill and Hannah Simonsen took on the opportunity to get more involved at East by bringing back the Hammocking Club. Their hopes for the club include being a safe space and calm environment for kids to hang out and come together.

What is the Hammocking Club and what are you planning to do with the club?

“We go to various parks like Loose Park and hammock. But we are planning on doing different activities like making posters for the school or I wanna do a bring your dog day soon,” Hill said.

Why did you want to restart the Hammocking Club?

“The Hammocking Club was a thing a few years ago that likely disappeared through COVID, but it’s something we all really enjoy. It’s also a way to get more involved while having it be a comforting space instead of the club being in a school setting,” Simonsen said.

When does the Hammocking Club normally meet?

“We had our first meeting on Saturday, Oct. 10 but we haven’t really talked about a specific day yet. They will probably be Saturdays or Sundays, whatever day people can go,” Hill said.

What was your first club meeting like?

“It was really just our friend group there but it was chaotic and fun. We all spent a lot of time struggling to put up our hammocks since we all just got new ones that day but we just sat in our hammocks for a while and hung out,” Simonsen said.

What are your goals for the club in the future?

“Probably just getting more people involved with it and to have it be a lasting club that will continue when we leave East, we also want it to turn into a safe space for people,” Hill said.

If you’re looking for a way to connect with new people at East and spend the day in the park, join the Hammocking Club.
