Bake sale raises money for third world

As an array of cakes and brownies appeared on the picnic tables at Porter Park, it marked the beginning of East’s Coalition Bake Sale held this Saturday from 9 – 2.

Coalition, who’s goal is to help children in need in third world countries such as Uganda, held it’s second bake sale this Saturday. The goal of the bake sale was to raise money to support Charity: Water, an organization that builds wells to supply clean drinking water to impoverished communities throughout the third world. A single well cost’s $2,000.

According to Coalition member and senior Emily Collins, in many third world countries, most communities do not have access to drinking water, so women and children must walk miles every day to gain access to water that is most likely diseased and dirty. When children are forced to walk hours a day to gather water to survive, they cannot attend school.

“[Walking to get water is] one of the biggest reasons why people don’t stay in school around the world.” Collins said.

Although the money will eventually go to Charity: Water, Collins says that Coalition will use the money from the bake sale to buy East themed water bottles. Coalition hopes to increase the overall donations by selling the water bottles and then sending the profits to Charity: Water. Coalition is also accepting donations to their project on the Charity: Water website.

The Coalition, which has around 100 active members this year, has a semester goal of raising $2,000 to specifically build a well near a school in Africa. The year long goal is the same as last, to raise money for many other projects and to educate people about the hardships of children in third world countries.
