Athlete of the Week: Zach Sederquist

A Q&A with sophomore Zach Sederquist, who has found great success on the JV bowling team. Sederquist has recently been a high-scoring bowler, getting nine strikes in a row at the Jan. 29 meet one frame away from a perfect game.

When did you start to bowl regularly to prepare for this season?

“I recently started going early this summer at Ward Parkway [Lanes] because it was kinda the only thing to do with COVID. We figured out that kids bowl free in the summer and somehow we still count in that age gap so we would go at least four times a week.”

Why did you decide to try out for the team?

“I did swim last year and it was kinda a lot and not that much fun. Some of my friends did bowling last year and said it was fun, so I kinda thought ‘why not.’ As I, was practicing, that was about all I did during the summer.”

What was the recent success in your Jan. 29 meet like?

“It was a home meet versus SM West and SM North. It was really fun because everyone was cheering for me, but also every time I was up to bowl, I was so nervous because I could ruin the streak with just one bowl. After four or five strikes, almost everyone in the lanes beside me were watching.”

Do you usually find this success at your meets?

“No, not usually. A lot of it was luck. I bowl probably on average four to five strikes a game but even two in a row is counted as a good day for me. ”

What were some of the coaches’ reactions to your success?

“My head coach was probably more nervous than I was. For any bowler, seeing the success leading up to an [almost] perfect game is commendable.”
