Athlete of the Week: Sarah Wilcox

Q: What are your plans regarding collegiate sports next year?

A: Next year I’m going to Creighton University which is in Omaha, Nebraska and I’m going to be playing tennis.

Q: What other schools were you looking at?

A: I started looking at schools in the summer going into senior year but it took me awhile to figure out what kind of school I wanted to go to. At the beginning I was set on leaving Kansas and going far away to Santa Clara or Richmond but as I started visited schools I realized I wanted to be closer to home. I ended up deciding between Iowa State, Drake and Creighton. During the whole process though I just looked at every school like huge schools like Ohio State or smaller ones like Charleston Southern.

Q: Why did you decide on Creighton?

A: I loved the support and sense of community in Omaha. I also like that they have a 4-year nursing program all on campus which a lot of school don’t have. I also like the Big East conference and the mid-size population of the school.

Q: How do you expect to fit in within the team next year?

A: I think it will go well. I already know Michaela Henne because she is from Kansas City and I met the rest of the team when I visited. I really liked both the women and mens teams so I’m excited to get to know everyone next year.

Q: How much training will you be doing? What will it consist of?

A: Practices and workouts sort of depend on the season. We’ll always have around two hour practices every day and then workouts twice a week but depending on if we’re in season or not it’ll change. In the spring we play every weekend so we don’t do as much lifting as the fall.

Q: What are your expectations going in as one of three freshmen next year?

A: I like that there are a couple other girls so I’m not the only one. I already know college will be an adjustment so having two other freshman girls on the team will help.

Q: What are you most excited about for next year?

A: I’m really excited to just play college tennis. It’s different than what I’m used to because it’s a lot more team-oriented as opposed to just playing for yourself. I will get to play pretty high on the team which I’m really excited about.
