Athlete of the Week: Ike Sheets

Senior Ike Sheets scored the goal putting East in the lead late in the Varsity Boys soccer game against Shawnee Mission West on Friday, August 26. The final score ended 3-3 in double overtime.

What were your feelings going into the game last Friday night?

“I was very excited because we had a massive student section and I was excited to get our season started and was hoping for a big win.”

Were you nervous for the game knowing that West has a very strong soccer program?

“Not really I was able to calm down my nerves before the game by listening to some hype up music and getting me set for the game.”

What is your go to pre-game hype up song?

“‘Apologize’ by Baby Keem.”

What things did you do mentally and physically to prepare and be ready for the game?

“We have to run through our warm up and make sure we are all ready for the game by getting everyone together during the warmups, making sure everyone is doing it in sync and everyone is on the same page.”

What type of emotions and feelings were going through your body when you scored?

“I got very excited, had goosebumps and was just so happy to be able to run over to the student section and see all my friends there cheering me on.”

What do you think that you gained or learned from the game even though it ended in a tie?

“I think we were able to find out some valuable things about our team this year and we are going to be able to clean up all those goals. There wasn’t a single goal there that was super impressive by the other team, just good shots that we can crack down on and make sure it won’t happen again.

What does your senior season mean to you?

“I think we all have the same goal this year and that’s to make it to the state final and win it and all the seniors on the team are pushing the team to make sure that we can get to that spot at the end of the year.”

What effect did going into double overtime have on you?

“Most people were cramping and you could tell they were very tired and did not have much gas left but I luckily was still feeling good and just was really trying to get that win.”
