After serving as SM East principal for the past five years, Jason Peres is moving to the Center for Academic Achievement to serve as the Shawnee Mission School District’s Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. After the school board approved his position, Peres announced his job change via an email to students, staff and parents on Tuesday, May 11.
The current director, Dr. Darren Dennis, resigned from the position after accepting a superintendent position in the Birmingham School District. Peres will take over Dennis’ role with a more high-school-led view on learning and instruction.
“I’m very passionate about teaching and learning, and curriculum and instruction is the root of teaching and learning,” Peres said. “When this position opened up, I saw it as a good fit for me and decided to throw my name in the hat.”
Peres started as a social studies teacher in the Blue Valley School District before being hired by SMSD as the SM East building principal in 2021. While he achieved his career goal of being a principal, this new position will allow him to leave a greater impact at the district level, according to Peres. His new position will include tasks such as ensuring there are set curricula for each specific course as a resource for teachers across all schools.
“This [job] directly impacts kids, and we knew we needed to get it right,” SMSD Superintendent Dr. Schumacher said. “Mr. Peres has continued to grow as an instructional leader from the very time he [came to SM East] and has continued to prove his worth in the district.”
SMSD board members have now released the application on their website for the principal position at SM East and hope to have the new candidate selected by June 8, according to Schumacher. The Human Resources team will complete the standard interview process for hiring a principal, and the candidate will have their final interview with Schumacher before their acceptance.
These job transitions don’t typically happen this late in the year, according to Schumacher, however, Peres is excited to take on his new role starting in the 2026-27 school year.
“As I was a building principal here at [East], I learned to become a better communicator, definitely a better organizer, and to pay attention to the details better than ever before,” Peres said. “[Those] are all things that I'm going to need to do in this new role, and I think [I’m] much better at those than where I was five years ago.”
Peres will still be seen in the SM East hallways when he visits schools — a key part of his new job. Interacting with students and teachers helps the curriculum and instruction director assess how different learning environments are managed throughout the district, from pre-K up to high school.
Though Peres is excited to step up to this new role, he’ll be sad to lose his every day interaction with students — especially the first day of school, according to Peres.
“It has been an honor and privilege to serve as principal at Shawnee Mission East High School, and this decision for me was not made lightly,” Peres said. “It was a very difficult decision, but for me, professionally, the right decision.”

Uzeo/la sam različite vrste zajmova od ove tvrtke {osobni zajam, poslovni zajam, zajam za automobil itd.} i također sam preuzeo/la na sebe da ljudima kažem o dobroti ove tvrtke jer ne želim da itko doživi ono što sam ja prošao/la u rukama lažnog zajmodavca, posebno samohranih majki poput mene. Vjerujte mi kad kažem da je njihova korisnička služba bila susretljiva i vrlo korisna kad god sam imao/la pitanja.
