A City of Chiefs – The Rundown on the Kansas City Chiefs’ Home Opener

Arrowhead Stadium — the “Loudest Stadium in the World” — will be packed this Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Chiefs Home Opener against the Baltimore Ravens — the pressure is on to win.

The Chiefs are kicking off their 60th season with red and yellow flags lining every KC street, people of every age in Mahomes jerseys and massive watch parties for every game.

Watching from the comfort of home is the easier option — stakes are so high for the team this year, nosebleed tickets are starting at $150, making it hard for fans to get their hands on any seats. Forget about getting a spot close enough to read “KELCE” off number 87’s jersey

“Going to the Chiefs game today is like going to a 2015 Royal’s game,” sophomore Luke Audus, a Chiefs superfan said, “It’s gonna cost you an arm and a leg, and then some to get to the bleachers.”

Fans are predicting and hoping that the Chiefs will play their best season yet with Patrick Mahomes as the quarterback.

“Best quarterback ever?” Sophomore Wilson McGinness said, “He’s not yet but I think he could be.”

The 24-year-old is starting his second year playing for the Chiefs and he’s breaking more records than it seems possible. In 2018, Mahomes broke nine.

Continuing his record-breaking tendencies early in the season, Mahomes scored seven touchdowns in the two away games this year against the Oakland Raiders and the Jacksonville Jaguars.

There will be a lot of eyes on Mahomes this Sunday, even from Ravens fans. Number 15 is under immense pressure, but that hasn’t stopped him from playing an exceptional game.

As well as 15, there will be a lot of eyes on 17 and 11.

As Tyreek Hill continues to recover from a shoulder injury, rookies Mecole Hardman and Demarcus Robinson — numbers 17 and 11, respectively — will be playing Wide Receiver.

Hardman’s love from the fans is on the rise, and although Hill is missed, his absence hasn’t caused a falter in the Chief’s offense quality.

“Hardman is basically Tyreek.” Audus said “Just younger.”

And it’s not only the fans who are supporting Hardman. In a recent interview from the Kansas City Star, Mahomes talked about Hardman’s performance in last week’s game.

“He sped it up,” Mahomes said, “and made big plays for us.”

So despite Tyreek Hill, ‘The Cheetah’, being benched, things are looking up for the Chiefs. And East fans are excited to watch.

While Audus will be watching the game from home, McGinness and sophomore Joe Young will be watching the game from the bleachers. Young is an avid attendee of live games and is looking forward to being in his usual red seat.

“The atmosphere is hype. Absolutely hype,” Young said. “It’s increased over the years as the Chiefs have gotten better, especially since Mahomes has been playing.”

The bleachers will be a sea of yellow and red this Sunday, and upholding their reputation, the sound of the fans’ chants will be deafening.

Fingers are crossed by fans all around that their brackets will go as planned, and just maybe, Mahomes will help lead the Chiefs to Super Bowl 54.
