2023 Spring Sports: Track and Field season update

With the track season halfway finished, here’s a quick recap of the team’s achievements so far:

The boys 4x1600m relay team consisting of junior Rowan Gibson and seniors Caden Peters, Blair Ptacek and Wyatt Haughton broke the school record at KU relays with a time of 18:22.3. Wyatt Haughton broke the 800m record with the fastest time in Kansas and breaking the school record with 1:51.42. The boys distance medley relay broke another school record with 10:22.01, with the team of Peters, Ike Sheets, Ptacek and Haughton.

Record-breaker Gibson thought they could have done better in the 4×1600.

“The conditions were really bad that day,” Gibson said. “We wanted to go faster, but when have another chance to get an even better time.”

On the girls team, Junior Lida Pagett received 7:26.25, the fastest time in Kansas for the Steeplechase — footrace over an obstacle course at KU Relays.

Last year there were three total records broken all year, compared to this year’s four halfway through the season.

“We are looking forward to taking several people to State,” Coach Emily Fossoh said. “Regionals will determine who attends State. We are strong in many events, so we’re hoping to get on the podium in several individual events and possibly as a team again.”
