Volleyball Coach Resigns After Two Years

Two weeks ago, after the girls of the SM East volleyball program returned their uniforms, warm-ups and bags, head varsity coach Rosacarla Salanoa unexpectedly announced her resignation. Tears streamed down her face as she explained that having both her and her husband coaching at the same time made it too difficult to take care of her four-month-old baby, Leila, who was her top priority. Every once in awhile, she could find a parent or a close family friend to watch Leila during their practices, but days when nobody was available were difficult. Both sets of grandparents were miles away; her parents live in Brazil and her husband’s mom lives in Hawaii. Now, Salanoa will take care of Leila during the day and will be behind the scenes coaching club volleyball during the spring. She will speak to Athletic Director Sam Brown about future coaches as he begins interviewing this week.

Though Salanoa is relieved to have the time to spend with her baby, she knows that leaving is going to be especially rough after a great season.

“It’s tough to leave especially after two years because I’ve gotten to really know a lot of the girls,” Salanoa said. “But I know I’m leaving for a good reason. I’m glad that I’m still able to see these players around, and I wish the best for all of them.”
