We’re Not Really Strangers

According to a 2018 Pew Research Center survey, 95%  of 13- to 17-year-olds have access to a smartphone, and a similar 97% use at least one of seven major online platforms. According to Global Web Index, 55% of Generation Z use their smartphones for five or more hours daily. And 26% are glued to their mobile devices for over 10 hours a day. In the midst of a pandemic, face-to-face conversations between teenagers are even more rare. Our goal behind this experiment is to see if our generation can still hold meaningful conversations away from technology.

With everything up in the air as ‘rona rages everywhere, senior Liv Olson has one constant she can count on: Harbinger. As her third year on staff kickstarts, Liv has her hands full as co-Head Broadcast Editor, Social Media Designer, and Multimedia Videographer. When it comes down to it, editing videos into the late hours of the night may not seem like something to look forward to, but you’d be wrong! Outside of journalism, Liv is involved in swim team, volleyball, SHARE, NHS, church youth group, and full schedule of AP classes. If you’re lucky, you might get the not-so-rare sight of her karaoke-ing to throwbacks in the car, lifeguarding, or tandem biking across downtown OP. »

Despite the unpredictable year, COVID is not holding back senior Lauren West from taking on her fourth and final year of Harbinger as a co-Online-Editor-in-Chief. Her unorganized desktop is cluttered just the way she likes it — Indesign open, a load of unfinished edits and at least 10 notifications reminding her she actually does have other homework to get to. Besides Harbinger, Lauren is involved in East’s SHARE, DECA, and Student Store programs. When she isn’t at her desk, she is most likely nannying or online shopping for clothes she doesn’t need. »
