Having a classic go-to after-school snack is a necessity, but eating the same things all the time can get monotonous. I’ve tried most of the weird and underrated snack combos from bell peppers with cream cheese to pickles and salami. But I decided to try even more foreign snack combos recommended to me by SM East students.
Cheez-Its and Raisins: 4/5 stars
For my first snack, I tried a combination of Cheez-Its and raisins. I had high hopes for this snack because the two seemed like the perfect mix of sweet and salty — and it was.
I bought the extra toasty Cheez-Its and the nostalgic mini boxes of raisins I used to snack on as a kid. First, I tried a Cheez-It with only one raisin on top and the sweetness and saltiness paired really well together.
But, through trial and error, I realized this snack works better as a trail mix. I mixed a box of raisins with a handful of Cheez-Its and ate it like I would normally eat a bag of chips. I finished my concoction of Cheez-Its and raisins in about five minutes and decided I would happily make this again if I had these two things in my pantry.
Cottage cheese with applesauce and cinnamon: 2/5 stars
As an avid cottage cheese lover, I despise it when people hate on cottage cheese. My usual go-to method for cottage cheese is to mix it with salt and pepper. So when I tried cottage cheese with applesauce and cinnamon I wasn’t a fan of the texture.
I try not to judge food before I taste it, so I thought just maybe it could have potential. But the mixtures of these two mushy textures created an unpleasurable chunky taste in my mouth.
The thick chunks of cottage cheese plus the smooth texture of applesauce did not pair well together, creating a chunky baby food sensation. Not to mention the appearance of this snack was anything but appealing.
When your food strongly resembles vomit, it’s hard to have a completely unbiased opinion before trying it. The only thing that could save this snack is the actual taste, not the texture.
The taste reminded me of French mousse but besides that, this was a letdown and I will continue eating my cottage cheese with only salt and pepper.
Marinated artichoke hearts and tortilla chips: 3/5 stars
I was eager to try a combination of marinated artichoke hearts and tortilla chips because it seemed like a deconstructed artichoke dip, which I’ve always loved. This combo was exactly what I expected — the crunchy chip paired decently with the juicy and marinated artichoke.
Although this combo didn’t disappoint, it definitely didn’t exceed any expectations I had. Maybe one day if I was really craving artichoke dip and I happened to have artichoke hearts and tortilla chips, I would do this. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy both ingredients to make this at a grocery store.
If you’re obsessed with artichoke dip, this is definitely worth a try, but if you aren’t a fan of artichokes I would save the money.
