One percent of ACT test takers across the country get a score above 34. According to act.org, about 75 percent of graduating seniors in Kansas took this college entrance exam, averaging a 22 out of 36.
Two East seniors, Rob Simpson and Kevin Xu, achieved a perfect 36 on their tests taken this fall.
In order to prepare for the exam, Xu purchased an ACT review book with six practice tests, which he started to work on two weeks before he took the test in October of this year.
“[The book] helped me learn to pace myself and gave me a feel for the type of questions that came up on the actual test,” Xu said.
For Simpson, the news of his score didn’t register the first time; his dad had to tell him again. But he was soon jumping up and down and fist pumping.
“I was pretty astonished,” Simpson said. “It didn’t quite register the first time around.”
