“To Our Daughter” Review

Every Sunday for the past five years, you could find me snuggled up on my couch with a bowl of popcorn, m&ms and my blankies, watching the latest drama between Kourtney and Scott unravel on Keeping Up with the Kardashians. But for the past nine months, Kylie Jenner, the youngest Kardashian, hasn’t made as much of an appearance on the show.

There weren’t as many snapchat stories about her newest lipstick colors or about her feelings for her rapper boyfriend Travis Scott. Fans across the nation, including myself, began to form their own opinions and speculations as to why Kylie was keeping herself away from the screen.

But on Feb. 1, Kylie Jenner gave birth to her first child. In an Instagram post Kylie said, “My pregnancy was [a journey] I chose not to do in front of the world.”

I was surprised because at 20 years old I did not expect the lipstick mogul to become a mother. She isn’t even legal to drink yet.

To make the birth announcement a more grand reveal to the public, Kylie posted a link to a video titled, “To Our Daughter,” posted on Youtube by Kylie on Feb. 4.

The link to the video was hidden in my Instagram feed that was being hijacked by WPA pictures. As soon as I saw Kylie’s post, I abandoned the “WPAyyyye” posts and went straight to Youtube.

The snippets of Kylie and Travis going to check ups and marveling at sonograms made me feel like I was a part of her journey. I loved their scenes together which contained artsy filters and old fashioned video camera edits. I thought these helped explain their relationship a whole lot more.

Kylie’s baby bump is finally revealed in the video, as she films herself in a mirror holding her stomach. Seeing the baby bump for the first time was a very emotional moment for me and even made me tear up a little bit.

Kylie’s best friend, Jordyn Woods narrates the video talking to Kylie’s daughter in the future. I didn’t enjoy Jordyn “talking” to the baby in the future because I felt like since Kylie is the mother, that she should really be the one narrating the video.

They then showed the baby shower and in this scene I felt like I was attending it. I enjoyed the decor of the celebration.

Kylie knew that her closest family and friends would not reveal her pregnancy to the public until she did. I appreciated how she kept this secret for so long and lived through her pregnancy without the worries of being judged by others because no one knew.

I can barely keep a secret about getting a bad grade on a test, but to have a baby in your stomach for nine months and not have anyone know about it is unbelievable to me.

By the end of the video I was utterly convinced that Kylie had made the best decision of her life with this baby.

The last scene of the video ends with Kylie giving birth, which I love because it brings it back to the beginning to her mom giving birth to her and wraps up the video nicely. It was the perfect end to an iconic video.

This video makes up for the past nine months Kylie has been off the grid. It is much more personal than just a bunch of selfies and baby bump photos on Instagram and Snapchat. The video shares an amazing journey that photos simply cannot.
