The Theater Booster club is holding a contest for the worst film ever. Titled “Plan 5 From SME”, this contest is looking for a video using similar techniques as are in “Plan 9 From Outer Space”, the fall play this year. Project Coordinator Debra Burnes believes this will be a chance for people to get involved and to gear up for the fall play.
“I was looking for a way that students could get involved and express creativity in the same way as Plan 9,” Burnes said. “It’s such a different movie and play and we were just looking for a fun project for the students to be a little creative and learn about the play.”
The videos must be 5 minutes or less in length and be faithful to the 1950s sci-fi genre. They encourage illogical scripts, bad actors and cheesy costumes and props.
“The underlying thing is for the kids to have fun and creative and embrace everything Plan 9 is, which is bad,” Burnes said. “It’s considered the worst film ever made. In one shot its daylight and in the next it’s nighttime and there were no retakes, this guy never took retakes because to him he just thought it was brilliant.”
The first 20 eligible entries will judged by SM East alumni Robert Butler, who used to be a movie critic for the KC Star. The top three will then be shown before the Thursday and Friday night performances of Plan 9. After the show the audience will vote on their favorite and the winner will be announced at the Saturday night performance. Finalists must attend the Saturday night performance. The winner will receive a $50 Chipotle Gift Card and the two runner-ups will also receive a small gift.
Entries must be submitted on Sunday Nov. 4 by 9 p.m.. To enter email your name, cell phone, email address and a link to the Youtube video to smetheatrebooster@gmail.com. Any questions can be directed to the same email.
