After a long winter, the weather in Kansas City decided to cooperate and warm up. The rising temperatures made it bearable to go outside and take photos for my project without freezing. I call it a 365, and I plan on taking one portrait for every day of the year.
This photo was actually taken prior to the warm temperatures, and considering the fact that the water and air were both frigid, I should have waited until later in the week to complete it. I’ve had this tendency to wrap myself up in things (like yarn or tape) for my photos, and this one wasn’t any different. I sprayed the water up in the air in order to catch the droplets, and added a flare to make the water more noticeable.
Definitely not one of my favorite photos and it was ultra-sunny outside so I decided to bunker down indoors. I had noticed earlier in the day when I blew out this candle how the smoke rose, and was intrigued by it. It’s a very simple portrait, but I do enjoy the film look that accompanies it, though. The effect was given to it by dulling the colors, adding grain, and layer over some old film scratches in Photoshop.
Ah, another post-Harbinger-deadline photo. Surprisingly, though, this one took place in what was left of the daylight – as we were finished early. I didn’t have much of a concept in my head going into it because there wasn’t much time throughout the day to think one up. I made it home just before the sun set completely behind the bushes in my backyard and used what I could. I added in some purple and red tones to showcase the sunset happening behind me.
Like I said earlier, I am currently obsessed with the whole wrapping-things-around-my-head-and-body movement. This one was slightly tedious, as I had to connect each individual paper clip. There must have been at leas 200, although they are not all visible due to the way they clasp together when wrapped up. It was an interesting shoot to do because it ended up looking as though it was water dripping on my head.
For this photo, I tried to find just about anything white that I could. If you all haven’t noticed by now, I am completely in love with lights. Whether it be light bulbs, streetlights, or sunlight, I adore it. This was kind of my backup, as the first pose I had a weird facial expression, and couldn’t quite duplicate the rest of it even after re-shooting multiple times.
A huge inspiration from this photo came from one that I was looking at earlier in the day. And while it was rather warm outside, I found a nice cool spot in the bottom floor of an empty parking garage. This is by far on of my favorite photos yet out of the project. I love that my red yarn made it back into yet another photo, and I am just obsessed with the water leak behind me. I added a bluish tint to compliment the tan and gray wall behind me.
I don’t usually do many black and white photos, but this was an exception. It was somewhat of a rushed photo, as I had a basketball game prior to it, and church afterwards. I went to the same parking garage from the day before. This painting is one that we had hanging in our house for quite some time, and I decided to use it as a prop. The pillars in the background made for a great series of lines to go with those in the painting. I added more grain to, yet again, create a film-like feel.
At day 230, I am nearly two-thirds of the way through my project. It’s an ongoing thought process, a struggle at times, but most of all, something that has affected the way I view the world to no end. Every day I find new things that inspire me, and writing this blog lets me reflect on those ever-growing inspirations.
