Sweetheart Nominees Announced

On the morning of Jan. 23, nominees for Sweetheart King and Queen were woken up in their own homes by members of Stuco. The candidates were congratulated with the loud bangs of pots and pans, blaring music and silly string as early as 6 a.m.

“They came in and bashed pots and pans, or at least that’s what it sounded like,” Sweetheart King nominee and senior Oliver Bihuniak said. “I was very surprised, I had no idea that I was nominated. I actually thought it was my little brothers messing with me until they said that I was nominated for WPA king.”

After all the nominees were woken up, they met for breakfast at the McDonalds on 95th and Mission, and congratulated each other.

The Sweetheart King will be announced at the WPA dance on Feb. 11, and the Sweetheart Queen will be announced at the boys’ Varsity basketball game at Shawnee Mission East on Feb. 10.

“It’s really amazing to know that people in my class thought of me as someone they should nominate,” Sweetheart Queen nominee and senior Quincy Bair said. “I definitely didn’t see it coming.
