The Breakdown
The Chiefs’ passing offense, led by 2018 NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes, has been their driving force this season. Their unstoppable offense scored 86 points in their two postseason wins. At Hard Rock Stadium, they’ll have to stop the 49ers from the high-pressure, high-sacks defensive setup they’ve played in this season to open Mahomes and the offense up.
The 49ers have also developed a dominant pass rush this year, giving the Chiefs a worthy test for this year’s title. Their well-rounded team with both a high ranking defense and offense has brought them postseason success, including nine sacks in their two wins against the Vikings and Packers. If the 49ers win, it will be because of the formula they developed in the regular season of running the ball and suffocating the Chiefs’ offense.
The slight favorite for the highly anticipated matchup is the Chiefs, but that doesn’t mean that it won’t be a close game, according to DraftKings. Player injuries could make the difference between a hometown parade and a tear-filled Sunday this year.
Running back Tevin Coleman led the 49ers against the Vikings in the postseason, before suffering a shoulder injury against the Packers. Raheem Mostert picked up where he left off and managed to set a new NFL record for second best rushing performance. Coleman has returned to limited practice and it’s likely that he will be able to play in the Super Bowl, according to NBC Sports.
Back in October, Mahomes injured his knee during week seven of the season against the Broncos. Luckily, what could have been a season ending injury kept him off the field for only two games. It did stop him from reaching his greatest potential though — this year’s output didn’t match up to his MVP season’s, according to SB Nation. But, he’s currently on an upward trend, throwing for 615 yards, eight touchdowns and no interceptions in the Chiefs’ postseason wins.
