Students and staff come together to support Rockhurst after tragic death of student

East students wore blue on Monday, Oct. 8 to support the Rockhurst community in honoring the life of a student who passed away this past Saturday in a fatal car accident hours before Homecoming.

Rockhurst High School president David Laughlin identified the student as senior Matthew Bloskey in the following statement to students and staff:

“The Rockhurst High School community is devastated by the loss of one of our seniors, Matthew Bloskey. As a community of faith, we join now in support of his parents and siblings, family, friends and classmates trusting in Matthew’s eternal reward with Christ. In the days ahead we will care for our students and Matthew’s family with all the strength of our great community at Rockhurst. We appreciate the prayerful support of others at this time.”

Senior Hallie Higgason helped organize the act of support, and she feels that tragedies like these are important to let students know that they aren’t “going through this without anyone.”

Additionally, the administration sent a plant to Rockhurst from “the Shawnee Mission East family” to show further support from the community.

“It may seem like a little thing to some people, but [it’s] just like anything you can do to show that you support them and you care about [them],” Higgason said.
