The Stroud’s Fairway location officially closed on Sept. 30 due to redevelopments that would be too great of an expense with the time left in their lease.
There were too many repairs needed that put the restaurant below their standards. Stroud’s short-term lease would have been up in a few years, so they decided to shut down the restaurant instead of investing in redeveloping it.
From celebrating birthdays there to dipping french fries in gravy, the Fairway location has sentimental value to senior Allie Erdner and her family.
“I see this as a loss for the community because it’s just great, home-style cooked food,” Erdner said. “I don’t really know where else you can get it.”
Stroud’s was a place full of memories for their family and others in the community, including junior Georgia Cook’s family.
“It was just a fun place to go to be with your family and feel like you’re still at home and [having] a family dinner,” Cook said.
Stroud’s brought its “famous pan-fried chicken” to Fairway in 2008 after moving from its original 1933 location off of Troost due to redevelopment. The Fairway location is one of three that have shut down in the past three years. However, Stroud’s still remains in Overland Park and Kansas City, where they will also be offering jobs to the 25 current Fairway employees.
