Still Figuring Out Steve: The drama film “Steve” left me questioning whether I liked it or not

Unless I’m binge-watching five hours of “Grey's Anatomy,” it’s virtually impossible for me to sit still and give a show my full attention. But, the drama movie “Steve” has somehow joined “Grey’s Anatomy” on that list.

“Steve” is a drama, directed by Tim Mielants, about a headmaster of a reform school who cares deeply about his high school students while struggling with his own mental health and trying to prevent the school from being sold.

When I first heard of the movie I didn’t think I would like it at all. It seemed like something my parents would make me watch.

In fact, I’m not totally sure if I liked it or not because although it started off strong, towards the end it lost a lot of potential.

From the first scene — a blue car driving down a country road with a kid smoking in a field — there was something about it I knew I would actually be able to pay attention to.

While watching it, I could tell the viewer is supposed to fall in love with the students who seem rough on the outside yet have a tragic backstory on the inside.

Except I didn’t fall in love with the characters. And the plot was just okay.

What drew me in was the love the headmaster, Steve, played by Cillian Murphy, had for his students, even while struggling through his depression. He would put his entire day on pause to talk to a student with something on their mind. He protected them, didn’t call the cops even when it would’ve been justified and actually listened to them — something many adults struggle with when talking to teenagers, especially “troubled” ones.

Mielants did what every producer, director and writer aims to do when creating movies and books, but something few succeed in. He showed and didn’t tell. The film was relatively short — just 90 minutes long — and though it would’ve been easy to have Steve talk about how much he loves his job, Mielants didn’t do that.

He showed Steve’s dedication to his students through the voice recorder Steve uses to remind himself of ideas he can do to better benefit his students. By putting himself in the middle of a fist fight, risking his safety, to help his students. Through agreeing to a news documentary being filmed to help the school’s image and prevent being shut down.

Which brings me to my next point. My least favorite part of the film.

The film met its biggest downfall when it became a film of a news anchor filming a documentary about the school and the students’ stories.

As the film switched from a scene of Steve talking to a co-worker to a grainy video screen of a student listing three things to describe himself, I started to lose interest.

The documentary idea took away from the depth of the film. All it accomplished was adding unnecessary chaos and too many characters to keep track of.

With the setting constantly changing and switching from a real-life scene to a tape meant to be part of the documentary, I just got confused throughout the movie.

I didn’t understand the point the documentary idea was trying to make. The story without the documentary was easy to figure out. A headmaster trying to do what most people don’t — give troubled kids second chances. But, add in the documentary and it becomes an out-of-control, rushed film with so much potential lost.

However, this isn’t a hate review. When the credits rolled, my immediate thoughts were that it was great but after thinking about it for a day, I couldn’t overlook the whole documentary piece.

For something short, sweet and wholesome, “Steve” was the perfect fit. But, if I were a film critic, it wouldn’t have done too well in my review.
