I found this interview on The Hairpin with Buzzfeed writer Arabelle Sicardi to be super interesting. The idea that self-care (putting on makeup, painting nails, etc) can be very emotionally- or mentally-charged really resonated with me as someone who wears makeup every day. Arabelle also makes the point that makeup can be a hugely empowering thing, as well as a way to connect more to our bodies and ourselves.
Everyone remembers the horrific attacks on journalists at French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo earlier this year. It sent the world into a self-righteous frenzy, and reminded Americans in particular of the necessity of aggressive protection of free speech. But now, after the streets cleared and the protestors went home, how is France reacting? This New York Times article takes a look at how the tragedy flung a fringe political group into the spotlight in upcoming elections.
These last few days I’ve been listening to a two-part episode series from the “This American Life” podcast called “Cops See It Differently.” It discusses the issue of racism within the police force by exploring different stories from across America.
This past week was possibly one of the best weeks of the year, and that’s because it was New York Fashion Week! Not only does this hint at what the fall fashion of 2015 will entail, it also shows some of the best street style you will see in the world. These people attending fashion shows have gone all-out, and despite whether they have money or not, it is all about making it work. This is Vogue’s best street styles of the Pre-Fall 2015 shows.
We certainly felt the cold this week, but a lot of us seem to forget that most of the country is feeling it with us. Most of the nation is in an arctic snap that is shattering records from PV to D.C.
Last weekend, Minnesota Timberwolves player Zach LaVine blessed us with a dominant performance in the NBA Sprite Slam Dunk Contest. They were so impressive that they have been compared to the great Vince Carter dunks of the 2000 Slam Dunk Contest. Take some time out of your day to watch these jaw-dropping dunks here.
In celebration of Mr. Sandoy’s 60th birthday this week, I made these delicious butter pecan cookies (his favorite flavor). Now I’m not usually a big fan of butter pecan, but I’ve got to say that these cookies were amazing. If you have any time I would definitely recommend making these cookies!
Recently, I saw on the news and on social media that people are in uproar about how Obama is trying to avoid grouping all Muslims together as terrorists. People believe that it is wrong of him not to say there are terrorists in Islam, and someone has even gone so far as to say they don’t believe the President loves America. By making a point to stay away from labeling Muslims and the people of Islam as terrorists, he will hopefully bring to others’ attention that the vast majority of these groups are not terrorists.
This is an interesting opinion column on a new bill proposed in Texas to allow people from states with lenient gun laws to carry their concealed weapons all around the country. Here, New York Times columnist Gail Collins explains why she disagrees with the bill, and how it could negatively affect America.
No lie, I just really love goats. With Chinese New Year happening this week, there’s been a lot of debate as to what the actual animal is. Is it a goat? Is it a sheep? A ram? We don’t know. Obviously, I’ve got my money on the goat, but regardless I think this is bound to be a great lunar year.
Vice does an interesting series called “The Real” where they show the real stories that inspired popular TV shows like “Mad Men.” I chose this video cause you can learn about the real life crimes that inspired the HBO show “True Detective.”
The Oscars are coming up. I found this, and it gives some predictions on who will win, which is pretty interesting. It also includes who should win, who shouldhave been nominated and who could win. Award season is always fun, and the Oscars is one of the biggest.
