The Lancers’ are off to a good start in the fall sports postseason, sweeping both girls’ tennis and golf state titles in two days.
The girls’ tennis team took the title home Sunday, after the play was suspended due to weather on Saturday. Sophomore Elizabeth Barnickel placed third in singles, while the sister duo of sophomore Stephanie and senior Elizabeth Wilcox took first in doubles against teammates freshman Aidan Epstein and junior Meredith Shackleford.
“A day before state all of us hit for four hours,” Wilcox said. “We play with each other all the time so my sister and I knew how to beat them.”

The Wilcox duo started out shaky, dropping their first two games in the first two sets. After calming down, the sisters won the rest of their games, finishing the match 6-2 in the first set and 6-0 in the second.

It is the 14th time girls’ tennis has won state in school history. Elizabeth has won in doubles the past three years, and was a part of two state champion teams in her four years at East.

“It’s a relief to be done but I’m sad that it’s over and I’ll miss my teammates,” Elizabeth said.

Golf brought home their title Monday, shooting a combined score of 343. Senior Anne Willman lead the way for the Lady Lancers, placing third individually with a 78. It was the first time the girls’ golf team had won state in 25 years.

“I didn’t play well on the front nine,” Willman said. “By the back nine I figured out what I was doing wrong and fixed it. I had no idea we were going to win state so I was just playing for the lowest score I could.”

Willman’s score proved to be enough, with the girls’ winning against Maize by five strokes.
