Despite the high temperatures, the boys’ varsity soccer team was able to beat SM West 3-0 for their season opener on Friday, Aug. 30. Sophomore Michael Mardikes, junior Ari Throckmorton and senior Noah Eidemiller scored the three goals.
Head coach Jamie Kelly wanted his team take possession early to help deal with the heat. Kelly hoped that if East was able to score early on, that would be enough to hold over the game. East took possession early on and sophomore Michael Mardikes was able to score at the beginning of the first half.
Within the first five minutes of the second half, junior Ari Throckmorton was able to score the second goal for East. 10 minutes later and senior Noah Eidemiller was able to increase East’s lead to three. For the rest of the game, the team played as if they were losing. There were numerous shots on goal but East was able to finish the game 3-0.
The team lost 20 seniors this year and only had four returning varsity players, junior Ari Throckmorton and seniors Noah Eidemiller, Dylan Martz and Andrew McClanahan. Coach Kelly was worried about his defense but this game proved that the defense is coming together. Goalkeepers junior Michael Moedritzer and senior Frank Esberg were able to keep a clean sheet with the help of the defense.
The team will take on Schlagle High School during a soccer tournament on Monday, Sept. 9 at BVDAC.
