Both SM East jazz bands, the Blue Notes and the Blue Knights, performed three selections on Feb 29. The Notes’ selections were “Come Fly with Me”, “Billy’s Blues”, and “Jiver’s License”. “Come Fly with Me” was originally composed by James Van Heusen for Frank Sinatra, and has since been covered by many jazz giants including the late, great Count Basie. “Billy’s Blues” is a simple, down-and-dirty blues chart composed by Mike Carubia. “Jiver’s License” is a fast-paced, cooking tune composed by Howard Rowe. The Knights played “La Fiesta”, a fast-moving, complex Latin chart by Chick Corea, “Stolen Moments”, a jazz standard written by Oliver Nelson which featured many, many soloists, and Duke Ellington’s “Feet Bone”, a medium blues with solis for nearly every section.
