I detest the cold. I dislike it more than spiders, eggs, and even Harry Potter haters. But the one benefit to extreme freezing weather is the chance of a snow day. And this week we were all given that chance. The chance to do all of the proverbial snow day activities: sledding, drinking hot beverages, sleeping in far more than we need to, and watching an inordinate amount of television. These things, I most certainly did, and I will elaborate on for you.
On Monday, the first day off, I woke up at 10 a.m. and began watching a BBC show called Skins on Netflix. I also discovered the wonder that is the Chai Tea Latte and consumed far more than my fair share – about five cups over the course of two days. And that’s pretty much the contents of my snow day. But that evening, once I found out we were to have another day free from school, I decided that I had to do something more worthwhile the next day.
So, on Tuesday, I decided to brave the weather, and go sledding while filming a video for the Harbinger. We all took our toboggans up to a big hill at East and flew, or fell down it, until we were so cold we couldn’t feel our fingers or toes. For me, that took around 20 minutes. We then decided to warm up at Starbucks in the Village, and I had Chai Tea Latte number four.
After that, I hung out with friends and played some rousing games of Would You Rather, Truth or Dare, Ten Fingers, and MFK. One of my friends was dared to make a snow angel outside, without a coat, and with his face flat in the snow. Another was forced to dance outside without shoes on, all the while singing “I’ll Make A Man Out of You” from Mulan.
To say the least, I appreciated these two days off, but logically I am thankful that the roads are clear enough to have school tomorrow so that no one puts themselves in more danger more driving on the icy roads. Still, while I was blessed with a five-day weekend due to the two amazing snow days, I can’t help but feel that I could use a bit more of a break. These days off have lulled me under a false sense of security – I feel as though I have nothing to do and can relax the day away – when I truly have a ton of work waiting for me once I go back to school. Like everyone, I loved the time I had to kick back, but am happy to get back to the swing of things tomorrow. Onward through 2011!
