The Shawnee Mission School District has made amendments to their rules of direct student contact. SMSD volunteers now need to complete a screening process which includes a training process comprised of a short training session, a complete fingerprint background check and an online application.
Examples of SMSD volunteers that would now need to complete this process of getting certified would be tutors, mentors and chaperones on school-sponsored trips. Parents that come in to volunteer for classes will not need to fill out an application or require the training. The screening and training process is targeted towards volunteers spending a long amount of time with the students.
On Oct. 25, Associate Superintendent Leigh Anne Neal will provide the required training session at 5 p.m. in the SME library. The meeting will precede the PTA meeting and presentation by Dr. Wes Crenshaw.
Parents or guardians planning to volunteer at SME or in the SMSD must attend this training meeting. An additional training session will be held on Oct. 30 at 1:30 p.m. in the SME Library. The training session is scheduled to conclude at 2 p.m.
Additional training programs will be posted on the SME homepage as they become available, along with the application can be found here.
