SMSD to stream sporting events using NFHS Network

SMSD will start using NFHS (National Federation of Highschool Sports) Network — a streaming service dedicated to high school sports — to live broadcast high school sporting events. Students and families can purchase an one month subscription of NFHS network for $10.99 or $69.99 for an annual pass.

NFHS Network will stream any event that takes place at a filming location — such as football, soccer, volleyball and basketball. New cameras have been installed at the district stadiums, at Shawnee Mission North and Shawnee Mission South; Westridge soccer complex; the aquatic center and all high school gyms.

“Obviously, we don’t have cameras on all the different locations for absolutely everything, but at least it’s an effort,” Athletic Director Debbie Katzfey said.

In an email sent to the school on Sept. 29, Katzfey wrote that the cameras were starting to be installed, and she is hopeful the cameras will be working by the end of the week.

“When COVID hit, the decision was made that we need to look into something in order for our kiddos and grandparents and people that are not allowed to come to the games and be able to watch,” Katzfey said.

Currently, only two spectators per athlete are allowed into sporting events. This regulation could cause problems for those with larger families. The NFHS service would allow those who can’t be at the event in-person to view it.

“It’s a way for people who aren’t around or maybe they are quarantined in their home to watch games that they otherwise wouldn’t have gotten to see,” Katzfey said.

Sophomore Mallory Keal is considering purchasing a subscription.

“I know a lot of people are wanting to see their friends play, watch seniors, or watch their favorite sport, so I definitely think it is a good investment to keep the kids involved in everything,” Keal said.
