The varsity Lancer baseball team ended last week with two wins against Lawrence Free State and Blue Valley High School.
Varsity competed against Free State on April 27 and swept, finishing the game 10-0. Senior Luke Anderson pitched the entire game and had a total of eight strikeouts.
“On Thursday we hit really well as a team had good pitches,” junior catcher Jonah Watt said. “Friday was a closer game, but we got it done.”
On Friday, the team took on Blue Valley with senior Henry Miller pitching Freshman Robert Moore scored the only run off of a hit from Anderson. The low-scoring game ended in a shutout, 1-0.
They currently have a record of 14-2 with losses from two out-of-state schools: Rockhurst and Deer Creek High School. The Collegiate Baseball Newspaper ranked the Lancers 25 among other top teams in the nation. According to Spectrum Sports KC, their pitching has been a big contribution to their success; The team leads in Kansas rankings with 33 strikeouts so far.
They have four more regular season games that will be played through next week until playoff and tournament games begin. Watt said that in the next week, their biggest focus will be winning the Sunflower League tournament.
“I think it’s most important to play as a team and have each other’s back,” Watt said. “We’re looking forward to competing and playing the best we can.”
After winning state last year, the close-knit team expects to win league and continue on to compete in the championship game. The Lancer’s next game will take place against Olathe East on May 2 at CBAC.
