SHARE’s 25th annual dodgeball tournament will be held today in the main gym from 4:15 p.m. to 6:30 p.m, and tomorrow from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This year, 23 teams will compete against one another. To participate, each team must donate two cans of green beans and one dollar for each of their members.
The cans will be given to the Johnson County Christmas Bureau, which provides assistance to low-income families in the community during the holidays. The money that each team brings in will be donated to Children’s Mercy Hospital and will be used to purchase blankets for patients. SHARE expects to raise around 400 cans of green beans for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau and over $200 for Children’s Mercy.
“I’m so excited, the execs have been waiting for [the dodgeball tournament] because it is the most fun thing we do all year,” SHARE Executive Claire Gillman said. “We ordered shirts because the seven of us are referees.”
SHARE has been at East for over 25 years, and the dodgeball tournament for over 10. A maximum of 32 teams are allowed to participate in the tournament. This year, however, only 23 teams are signed up to play. Each team consists of eight to 10 people. The teams are allowed to dress up and make shirts for the tournament as well as pick their own team name. Senior Danya Issawi is one of several participants who are playing on more than one team.
“One of my teams is called The Wrecking Balls,” senior Danya Issawi said. “And we’re planning on dressing up as Miley Cyrus and putting our hair in buns. And my other team is called Abusement Park and we’re getting custom-made shirts.”
