Two East students received the Johnson County Shooting Stars Scholarship: seniors James Fink and Mary Grekstas. This program, open to all Johnson County high school seniors, gives a total of $65,000 each year to students in the fine arts programs.
Students display their art at a Gala. Nine $1,400 first place scholarships, nine $700 scholarships and nine honorariums of $350 are given out to winners. Each student must be nominated by a fine arts teacher from their school.
Grekstas received first place in the top wind and percussion, winning $1,400 toward the college of her choice. Fink placed first in the photography competition, winning $1,400 toward the college of his choice.
Fink displayed a cyanotype which is a camera-less process where you coat paper with a light sensitive material and get a negative and expose it in sunlight. The finished product is a print thats on a porous watercolor paper that has a blue color to it.
