Early Sunday morning, Shawnee Mission East lost one of its students. The Kansas City Star reported that senior Tyler Rathbun passed away around 3 a.m. after the ATV he was riding rolled over in a field. The fatal crash happened on Victory Road just south of West 3951 Street in rural southern Miami County, KS.
When the authorities arrived, they found a Polaris ATV occupied by four other East students had rolled in a field, killing 17-year-old Rathbun.
There was a gathering at the Dunn household on Sunday and a ceremony at Hillcrest Church later that night. Hundreds came out to pay their respects to Rathbun.
There will be a service at 4 p.m. on Friday at Village Presbyterian Church, located at 66th and Mission Road, for Tyler. All Lancers are welcome. A reception will follow at 6:30 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gym of East.
