The SM East Robotics team had their one and only competition of the year at the Hale Arena March 14-16. The team is proud of their feat, placing 19th out 55 teams.
“We had some problems in the beginning,” Senior Nash Reimer said. “but they would have been solved if we had practiced more before the competition.”
Upside down frisbees posed the biggest problem for the team’s robot. When a frisbee is upside down, the mechanisms inside the machine don’t know how to shoot it, causing them to lose points for not being able to complete the task.
The goal of the For Inspiration of Science and Technology (FIRST) Robotics competition was to create a robot that could complete tasks of throwing frisbees and climbing a tower.
Because of the limited 8 weeks of preparation time that the team gets, their robot was able to throw frisbees but could only make it to the first level of the tower, earning them only 10 points.
“They give us eight weeks to design what would take a group of engineers months.” Club sponsor Vincent Miller said.
