The Lancer girls’ soccer team beat rival SM West 1-0 in an overtime golden goal on their Senior Night last Thursday. They upset the Vikings, handing them their first Shawnee Mission loss and their third loss of the year.
The game was back-and-forth, neither side able to get a strong shot on goal for most of the game. At the end of the first half, West had East’s fan section gasping for breath as an attacker was able to slip the ball by sophomore goalie Emily Chisholm, only to have sophomore defender Adalaide Kline make the goal-saving clear within feet of the goal line. At the half, each team was stuck at nill-nill.
The second half started with strong aggression by the Viking offense, but they weren’t able to pull off any strong attempts at the net. With a little more than 12 minutes left in the half, senior forward Victoria Sabates broke into the top of the box with the ball, and skipped a grounder at the right post. Diving, sophomore Viking goalie Alyssa Gregory was able to punch the ball away. With 5:45 left in the half, junior Emma Braasch fired from the top of the box right into Gregory’s legs, missing the goal.
The clock dwindled down, sending the game into overtime. In two 10 minute halves, the first team to score the “golden goal” wins. The Lancers kept their attack going. And with 20 seconds left in the first half, they snuck the ball by Gregory. But junior Viking defender Morgan Mauck was able to make the save for her goalie and force another 10 minutes of overtime.
In the second overtime half, Braasch finally struck gold when Gregory strayed too far out of the goal to try to punch away the ball in the air. Braasch took to ball off the bounce and drilled it into the upper left corner. The Lancer girls dog piled in a heap of white uniforms at the top of the box.
The team is now 7-3-1 on the season, going up against the Olathe South Falcons at the Olathe District Stadium next Tuesday.
