The boys’ varsity swim team had their first swim meet of the season against Olathe East on Thursday and a district wide meet this past Saturday.
On Thursday, the boys varsity team surpassed the Olathe East swim team by 54 points, allowing the majority of the team to get their state cuts for several events.
Senior Christian Hense was one who qualified in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle Relay, 100 Butterfly, 100 Backstroke and 400 Freestyle Relay.
“We entered this season with hard practices that will prepare us as the season goes on,” Hense said. “We have great coaches, Wiley Wright and Colby Dischinger, who were both swimmers so they have vast knowledge in the sport.”
On Saturday, the boys’ swim team took first place against all four of the other Shawnee Mission Schools by 214 points.
“With all that being said, we are still trying to work hard,” Hense said. “Lawrence Free State is a fierce competitor, so we are all looking forward to performing well this season.”
This Saturday, they will take on Olathe South during the Olathe South Invitational at California Trail Middle School from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.
