In order to make prom bigger and more organized, prom sponsor and art teacher Emma Chalk created the first-ever prom committee that’s not directly affiliated with StuCo.
According to committee graphic designer senior Abi Limbird, having the committee be separate from StuCo and not only made up of junior members ensures that both juniors and seniors who care deeply about making prom a success are the ones behind planning it.
“Ultimately making the prom committee something people need to apply for was supposed to make sure everyone wants to be there,” Limbird said.
After completing a written application, each member of the committee is assigned to a specific team based on their expressed interest such as design or decorations, submitted on a Google Form, open to all juniors and seniors on Sept. 15. Committees consist of vendor relations, fabrications, public relations and graphic design.
The vendor relations team contacts security companies, DJs, photo booths and food and drink vendors. The fabrications team creates and purchases decorations for the dance. The PR and graphic design teams work together to create visually appealing signage and advertisements to publicize the dance on Instagram and with posters.
According to Chalk, the committee’s goal is to make prom a must-attend event for all upperclassmen.
“I think so often prom is just the in-between of dinner, pictures and the afterparty for kids,” Chalk said. “But we want prom to be a destination event where people want to stay.”
The committee is dedicated to adorning the venue, Starlight Theater with on-theme decorations made and acquired by the Fabrications team. According to Chalk, the theme has never been used at East’s prom yet.
“To my knowledge, this is a new theme,” Chalk said, “and it’s very different from last year’s theme, the Roaring Twenties. I think it’ll be a fun contrast.”
