One team’s perfect season will end tonight. The Lancers face the other dominant team in the Sunflower League, the Eagles of Olathe North. Both teams are 11-0 going into the substate football game.
East’s defense will have to contain last season’s Sunflower League offensive player of the year, running back Venus Triplett. The Lancers have 2013 Sunflower League defensive player of the year, Kyle Ball, on their side.
The Lancer secondary will also have to cover North’s deep passing threat from quarterback Cole Murphy. On the other side, the Lancers have not completed a pass in the postseason but use a dominant running game from senior quarterback Gunnar Englund and junior running back Wyatt Edmisten.
East has only allowed one touchdown during the postseason. Tonight will bring their toughest challenge of the year.
All week, players have been watching film to prepare as much as possible for the other undefeated team.
“Little things like their weight on their hands or where they’re aligned help us figure out which plays they are going to run,” senior linebacker Jack Anderson said.
Kickoff is at 7 p.m. at Shawnee Mission North. Can’t make it to the game? Watch the live broadcast here.
