Coming off a four-game winning streak, the Lancers look for redemption tonight against the 2-2 Lawrence Free State Firebirds. Last year, Free State broke the Lancers’ five-game winning streak and dished out one of two losses on the year. The game was filled with fumbling trouble, as then-senior quarterback Christian Blessen fought through the beginning of a season-ending back injury.
The teams matching up in Lawrence tonight are much different than they were last year. The Lancers are ranked first in the Sunflower League, anchoring their undefeated season with an average of 362 rushing yards per game. Junior running back Wyatt Edmisten exploded on the scene this season, rushing for 429 yards and 12 touchdowns. Using their experience from last year, senior quarterback Gunnar Englund and senior wide receiver Alec Dean have connected for 327 yards and four touchdowns so far this season.
The Lancer defense has rounded the team out this year, with a smothering performance that held opponents to an average of seven points per game. Senior Kyle Ball is a league leader in sacks, with 36 tackles and four sacks, and senior Charley White has already roped in two interceptions on the season.
Meanwhile, Lawrence Free State has struggled to gain footing in their 2014 season. After losing quarterback powerhouse Joe Dineen last year, Free State relies entirely on their running game to score touchdowns. Leading the team is senior Bryce Torneden, who is ranked fourth in the league with 433 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Tonight’s game will take place in Lawrence. Kick off is at 7 p.m. and the theme is pajama party. Can’t make it to the game? Watch the live broadcast here.
