The Lancer Cross Country team will be competing in the Sunflower League race on Saturday, Oct. 19, held at Rim Rock Farm just outside Lawrence. For the C-Team, this will be the last race of the season. For Varsity, this will be the final “practice meet” before Regionals, which will be held at Lone Elm Park in Olathe on Oct. 26.
The boys’ and girls’ varsity team are currently ranked fourth in the region. The boys are 19 points behind third placed team SM Northwest. In Kansas 6A high school competitors, there are four regionals. Only the top three teams in each region qualify for state. East’s region consists of eight teams.
“Rim Rock is one of the harder meets, so hopefully we can keep up with some of the top teams,” said sophomore varsity runner Lance Meng. “It’s a very hilly course and also a very scenic course.”
The boys’ cross country team has not qualified for state since 2005, and the girls’ team since 2007. According to junior runner Will Moore, in order to qualify this year, everyone will have to drop their time, and they will need to run in a pack.
“Practices are getting shorter and faster,” Moore said. “In general, our bodies are recovering a little bit more.”
The middle school runners only run one mile, and they will start off the meet at 8:20 a.m. After that, the JV girls will be running a 4k at 9 a.m. followed by the JV boys 5k at 9:30. Varsity girls will run at 10 a.m. with the varsity boys at 10:30. Finally, C-Team girls will run at 11 a.m. followed by the C-Team boys at 11:30.
