Why Journaling is One of the Best Ways To Spend Quarantine

By

With the city under new stay-at-home orders, many different aspects have been added to my daily life — boredom, sleeping, and lots of sitting around with nothing to do. One thing this new way of life has taught me is how to deal with my surplus of free time. For the first week of staying at home, I mostly laid around and watched Netflix. By the second week, however, I found something to occupy my time: journaling.

I found a YouTube account, by Amanda Rach Lee, a while back that explained the idea of a bullet journal perfectly — a daily to-do list, monthly planner, and trackers to help keep my life organized all rolled into one. The trackers can watch daily habits like working out and eating healthy, or expenses as you make and spend money, or even just writing about your day.

I started a bullet journal in quarantine, just writing about my day, because I thought it would be interesting to go and look back on in future months:

Quarantine Day 7: Officially a week down of quarantine! I decided to make this journal today, so I could track how it’s going, and give me something to do so I don’t lose my mind. Honestly doesn’t feel like it’s been a week, because the days have gone by weirdly fast even though I’ve done absolutely nothing. I talked to a couple friends today so that was good to catch up.

Quarantine Day 8: I barely did anything today except for watching my show and lying in bed. I got Freddy’s for dinner which was good but it gave me an awful stomachache so I didn’t get to workout. I just showered and then watched my show some more! Now it’s 10 P.M. and I’m already going to bed.

Quarantine Day 9: Today I was super productive! I started a full bullet journal for April with planners, a calendar, and trackers, so I’m excited to start using that! I also washed my hair, prepared for online school, did a face mask, and worked out. I’m still trying to stay on a schedule and wake up/go to bed early.

I’ve had a full bullet journal — calendar, to-do list and trackers — for a few days now and my favorite thing about it is how much I can customize it. I make it myself, spreads and everything, using just markers, a pen, and a ruler. I have loved having a bullet journal so far, and I will definitely be using it for a while. It’s helped me keep my daily life in check and myself sane, so I would recommend starting one if you need a little organization.
