Plans for renovating the old Macy’s building into retail, boutique and office space have been announced by First Washington Realty (FWR), the firm that owns the Prairie Village Shops.
“In Spring 2021, The Village will be undergoing a once-in-a-lifetime renovation build of the old Macy’s box,” FWR said in their October brochure. “This project totals 120,000 square feet with a multitude of options from a multi-tenant anchor space to highly visible small shop opportunities and boutique office spaces.”
The anchor tenant would be the largest tenant in the building. For example, Target and the AMC theater are the two anchor tenants at the Ward Parkway Shopping Mall.
The plans include up to five ground-floor shops ranging from 1,500 to 5,400 square feet. The first floor will house either a single anchor tenant with around 41,500 square feet or two 18,250 square foot tenants. On the second floor, there are three office spaces with private terraces, ranging from 1,800 to 26,174 square feet, with a common courtyard.
During the Oct. 5 city council meeting, a representative from FWR presented the plans to Mayor Eric Mikkelson and other city staff officials. The firm presented renderings of the plans to the council, but has not yet submitted any official documents to the city planning commission and codes department.
This will be the third iteration of the former Macy’s building. Before becoming a Macy’s in 2006, it had been The Jones Store since 1958.
In addition to the renovations the former Macy’s building will undergo, the former building that housed Standee’s Theater will also be redeveloped in the near future. The space can hold up to 13,915 square feet for possible retail space.
“As one of the area’s landmark centers, FWR’s vision is to continue the transformation of the iconic Shops at Prairie Village into a regional epicenter of daily needs and engaging experiences,” the firm wrote in their October brochure.
Below are renderings of the plans from First Washington Realty’s October Brochure.
