This Thursday April 4, all Orchestra members will be embarking on a trip to Los Angeles, Calif. for four days to perform and sightsee.
According to the Orchestra Boosters website, the purpose of the trip is to bond as an orchestra and gain academic enrichment.
Orchestra members will be leaving at 7 a.m. morning from KCI Airport, to arrive in Los Angeles approximately four hours later. During the trip, the students will be visiting a variety of attractions in California. Some of these include the Page Natural History Museum, the Grammy Museum and the Santa Monica beach.
One of the biggest parts of the trip is attending an LA Philharmonic concert on Friday. The orchestra previously planned on playing for the Youth Orchestra LA, however that part of the trip was cancelled. Instead, they will be spending time at their hotel.
Students will also be performing at Fullerton College in Anaheim on April 6, followed by an evening at the Disney Land Park.
This year, the cost of the trip was $1000. Students were given chances to fundraise money for the trip. Although the entire orchestra was invited, only 85 students are going to Los Angeles due to several conflicts.
In the past, the orchestra trip has always been to a destination on the East coast or Canada. Although orchestra director Jonathan Lane attempted to organize a trip to San Francisco several years ago, it did not come to fruition. This is the first year the orchestra will be traveling west of Kansas, having travelled to Boston for their previous trip.
Coordinator Christine Rorie organized this year’s trip along with orchestra teacher Jonathan Lane.
